Frequently asked questions
Got questions? Here are some of the things we get asked most often.
What is Be Active Hampshire?
Be Active Hampshire is a free 12-week programme to help adults move more and feel better. It’s designed for people who aren’t currently active and offers friendly, low-pressure support to help you get started.
Do I need to be fit to join?
Not at all. This programme is for people who aren’t doing much physical activity right now. Whether you’ve never exercised or it’s just been a while, we’ll help you ease into it at your own pace.
I’m on a low income—will there be any costs involved?
No. Everything is completely free. There are no hidden costs, no equipment needed, and no gym memberships. We’ll only suggest things that are fully funded or affordable if you want to continue after the programme.
I live in an area where not much is on offer—will there be anything near me?
Yes. We’re working in areas where people are least likely to be active, and that includes places where support has felt out of reach before. Use our map or sign-up form and we’ll help connect you to something close to home.
Where are the sessions taking place?
Sessions run across Hampshire in local community venues, parks and halls. We’ll aim to offer something close to where you live.
Can I take part if I have a long-term health condition or mobility issue?
Yes, as long as your GP or healthcare professional hasn’t advised against physical activity. Many of our sessions are adapted for different needs and we can work with you to find something that feels safe and manageable.
I haven’t exercised in years—can I still join?
Yes. The sessions are designed to be gentle, welcoming, and beginner-friendly.
What kind of activities will I be doing?
Sessions might include things like walking groups, light dance, yoga or stretching, chair-based movement, or gentle strength-building. What’s available depends on your local area, but everything is suitable for people who are just starting out.
Is this only for people that want to lose weight?
Not at all. This programme is about helping people move more and feel better—whatever your goals. Some people join for health reasons, some for confidence, some just to feel a bit more like themselves again.
I've got caring responsibilities, can I still take part?
Yes. We try to offer flexible options, including sessions in the evenings or weekends. Let us know what works best for you when you sign up, and we’ll aim to match you with a suitable group.
